Foggy Windows
My Window Is Fogged Up Between the Glass. Can It Be Fixed?
Usually, yes. Fog you can't wipe off from either side means the seal on the sealed glass unit has failed and moisture got in. If the frame is still solid, the glass unit alone can often be replaced. If the frame is rotting, drafty, or several windows are failing, replacing the whole window usually makes more sense.

What the Fog Is Telling You
Fog between the panes
The seal around the glass unit has failed. Moisture is trapped inside the window, so it will not clean off from either side.
Less insulation
Many double-pane windows hold an insulating gas between the glass. Once the seal fails, that gas can escape, so the window may feel colder in winter.
Fog on the room side only
That is not a failed seal. It is indoor humidity, common in bathrooms and kitchens and on cold Illinois mornings. Better ventilation usually fixes it.
Fog on the outside
Dew on the outdoor glass on cool mornings is normal, and often a sign the window is insulating well.
What to Check First
- 1
Wipe both sides of the glass. If the fog stays, it is between the panes and the seal has failed.
- 2
Look for a label or etching on the glass or frame with the maker and year. Many window warranties cover seal failure for years.
- 3
Press on the frame and sash near the fogged glass. Soft wood, rot, or gaps you can feel air through point toward replacing the window, not just the glass.
- 4
Count how many windows are fogging. One is a glass repair. Several of the same age usually means the rest are close behind.
Drilling and drying a fogged window can clear the view for a while, but it does not reseal the unit or put the insulating gas back. If you want the fog gone for good, the glass unit or the window has to be replaced.
Common Questions
Can I replace just the glass instead of the whole window?
Often, yes. If the frame and sash are in good shape, the sealed glass unit can be swapped out on its own, which usually costs less than a full window.
Is a fogged window an emergency?
No. It will not fall out or break because of the fog. It is a comfort and appearance problem that tends to get worse over time.
Why did my window seal fail?
Seals wear out with age, sun and the freeze and thaw cycles of Illinois winters, so older windows are the most likely to fog.
Does Renovate Right 365 do glass-only repairs?
