Patio Doors
Why Is My Sliding Patio Door So Hard to Open?
Most of the time it is a dirty track or worn rollers under the door. Clean the track first and adjust the rollers. If it still drags, the rollers usually need replacing. If the frame is bent, the glass is fogged, or you feel a draft, it may be time for a new door.

The Usual Causes
Dirt in the track
Grit, pet hair and dead bugs collect in the bottom track and make the door grind and stick. It is the most common cause and the easiest fix.
Worn or flat rollers
The small wheels under the door wear out over the years. A door that scrapes or rumbles, even with a clean track, usually needs new rollers.
Rollers out of adjustment
If the door sits too low, the bottom drags on the track. Adjustment screws near the bottom corners raise or lower it.
A bent track or frame
A dent in the track, or a frame that has shifted as the house settled, can make the door bind in one spot. That usually needs a professional.
Try This First
- 1
Vacuum the bottom track, then wipe it clean with a damp cloth. Get into the corners.
- 2
Use a silicone spray lubricant on the track. Skip grease and oil, which hold on to dirt and make it worse.
- 3
Find the adjustment screws on the lower edge of the door, usually behind small caps. Turn them a little to lift the door off the track, then test it.
- 4
Look along the track for dents or bent spots. A small one can sometimes be eased back with pliers. A big one needs a new track.
If the door still fights you after a cleaning and an adjustment, the rollers are likely worn out. Replacing them takes lifting the door out of the frame, which is heavy work for one person.
Common Questions
Do I need a whole new door if it is hard to slide?
Usually not. Most sticking doors need a cleaning, an adjustment or new rollers. A new door makes sense when the frame is damaged, the glass is fogged between the panes, or the door lets in drafts even when it is closed.
What lubricant is best for a sliding door track?
A silicone spray. Grease and oil attract dirt and turn into grit in the track.
Why does my door stick more in winter?
Cold makes weatherstripping stiffer, and frost or ice can build up in the track. Keeping the track clean and dry helps.
